Why Cove?

While the profession and business of Cove Public Affairs is the Public Affairs, people are often curious ‘why cove?’.

Like a lot of Atlantic Canadians, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean. Lacking the sea legs to venture far away from land, I usually enjoy the ocean from the shore. For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt calmness and clarity whenever I spend some time in a small cove. Anytime I’ve felt the heaviness of a difficult situation, the high stakes of a decision, or the need to take a deep breath before seizing a new opportunity, I found myself sitting in a cove near my home. Taking in the sights, sounds and smells, allowing them to clear my mind.

For me personally, a cove is a place to clear the mind, focus on the issue or opportunity, and see a clear path forward. I don’t think I’m alone in that feeling. It’s a place to recharge, refocus and build a plan for action. In a vast and unpredictable ocean, a cove is a safe place, sheltered away from the outside noise.

As I embarked on creating my own incorporated communications consulting company in 2017 and considered what I’d hope to deliver to clients; the analogy was clear. It would be the ultimate privledge to be a metaphorical cove for clients. To be a safe, quiet place. To welcome clients as they come and go like waves, each time preparing them for their next trip out to sea. To focus on the task at hand with strategic thinking and clarity for the future – whether that future is a single day, or a generation, from today.

People often asking me “which cove” the company name ties back to. While there are coves in my hometown of Calvert that I’ve loved spending time in – Broad Cove and Keough’s Cove for the enquiring locals – I’ve found the same clarity in coves near my current home in Witless Bay, just as I have in Nova Scotia, South Carolina and Caribbean Islands.
